Marathon and its partners, such as Tire Stewardship BC and other provincial stewardships, have been promoting the benefits of using recycled rubber. The next step along the environmental continuum is to localize our supply chain. Marathon sources out quality suppliers that provide quality materials and are within 500km radius of our facility in Surrey.

Marathon is the only supplier in BC, of rubberized playground and athletic surfaces which has 92% of its raw material being manufactured in BC. Some suppliers might call themselves urban green but their product comes from Ontario, Korea, and China. We on the other hand support local quality oriented BC companies for all of our recycled rubber and our playground binders.

Companies who support local vendors reduce their overall foot print on the environment. Buying locally produced products from local businesses is a sure way to help the environment while boosting our local BC economy.

Recycled rubber that is used as a playground surface promotes safety because it does not de-compose or blow away. It is non-toxic and does not harbor insects or mold.

TURNING TIRES INTO RUBBER SURFACING:

* Scrap tires are picked up from tire shops and shipped to the tire recyclers facility

* Scrap tires are processed and refined by size reduction techniques designed to achieve a range of particle sizes.

* Mechanical grinding is the most commonly used process. This process breaks down the rubber into small particles using a variety of grinding techniques. The steel components are removed by a magnetic separator (sieve shakers and conventional separators). The fibre components are separated by air classifiers or other separation equipment

* Recyclers do not burn the rubber, but convert them into high-grade rubber crumb.

* The rubber crumb is purchased from the tire recyclers.

* Recycled SBR and EPDM rubber are mixed with a polyurethane binder to achieve a
specific ratio mixture that is poured and troweled in place, or poured into a mold for tiles.

Welcome to 2012

I hope everyone had a nice holiday season and is looking forward to a great year. According to the Chinese calendar it is the year Dragon, which means strength and prosperity.

Marathon has just experienced its two biggest years and we are upping our game for 2012. We have invested in new surfacing equipment and staff training to ensure a high quality installation. We are currently working on a new interactive feature for our playground surfacing, and we are pleased to announce a new member of our business development team, Barbara Frewin (barbara@marathonsurfaces.com). Barbara has an entrepreneurial background having run her own painting and sport clothing business and has been training with Marathon over the past six months. If you would like any information on our surfaces or a quote for a project, please do not hesitate to give Barbara a call.

2012 Projects

Fort McMurray running track: Marathon is looking forward to completing the largest track surfacing project in Canada in 2012. It is a blue Rekortan M99 (full pour). Look for pictures on our website in the summer.

Ladner Lawn Bowling Club: Marathon has been contracted to build a synthetic turf lawn bowling green at the LLBC. We will construct our third synthetic lawn bowling green this spring.

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT COMPANIES KNOW EQUIPMENT NOT SURFACING!

Most playground equipment suppliers are motivated to sell iron and plastic not safety surfacing. According to the Canadian Playground Safety Institute, 80% of accidents on playgrounds happen as a result of falls. So why is safety surfacing an afterthought? It is an afterthought because playground equipment suppliers make more money selling equipment than safety surfaces.

When you are deciding on a safer playground decide on safer surfacing!
